Gary’s Picks
Sitting at the top of my list for this Saturday is Riip Beer Co. These guys have been killing it for years now and somehow just continue to get better and better. Sure, they’re proficient across a bunch of different styles, but when it comes to West Coast IPAs, they’re in a league of their own. It’s pretty rare to see their beer on tap in this part of town, so you can be sure I’ll be heading back for refills throughout the day.
For years, 14 Cannons has been my go-to under-the-radar pick to turn people on to. Not only is the beer fantastic but it’s an awesome taproom to enjoy it in. But this time I’m gonna shine some light on a brewery I’ve heard amazing things about but have never tried — Station Craft Brewery out of Dana Point. Their head brewer, Steven Hicks, has got talent for days and we even brewed a collab beer together back in the day when he was at Karl Strauss. I’ve got my eyes on their California IPA, Castles of Sand, hopped with Nelson, Idaho 7, Galaxy, and Ekuanot. Ooooweee!!

Is it too obvious to say Green Cheek is my go-to? I stop by any time I’m in the OC (I still dream of the Chocolate Spumoni, my all-time fave milkshake IPA, and pray for its return), so if they’re going to be in LA County, they’re a first stop, for sure. You can’t go wrong with any IPA or stout from them.
Burning Daylight is my under-the-radar choice. I got to hang with them at their first anniversary party and anytime I visit, they are incredibly welcoming and kind. They make solid IPAs and pale ales that are worth a try.

When I get to Brews & Crews, I’m heading straight to Green Cheek, the stunners from Orange County. They’re best-known for their excellent hazies, but their WC IPA and lager programs have been steadily growing into some of the best in the region. Whatever they bring this weekend, I want it.
For all the hype surrounding breweries in LA, OC, and Ventura County, small-but-mighty breweries in San Bernardino County have a lot to offer. One name I keep hearing is Sandbox Brewing, located just off the 10 in Montclair. They’re making the trip west just for this event, and I’m psyched to try them out.

Ironically, I may start out with the hosts themselves, 14 Cannons. After trying a few various cans sprinkled through the last few years, I finally got a chance to visit their taproom recently and was wowed by the caliber of each beer. From their flagship IPA Tyrannicide to traditionally poured Patient Pilsner to the immaculate K-17 Dark Lager, I won’t have to go far to experience one of my favorite new breweries.
Despite having no shortage of Orange County visits on a regular basis, I still have not gotten my hands on anything from Dueling Ducks. Yet, every brewer I trust in the OC has name-dropped them without prompting. It might just be time to see what these birds are all about at the Brews & Crews Fest.
