Beer Hopping: Three Spots to Drink Beer in Glassell Park

Your weekend guide to beer hopping to breweries, beer bars, and bottle shops across SoCal's best neighborhoods.

Northeast LA’s tiny Glassell Park packs a surprising punch, both for places to eat and places to drink, within its tiny, residential bounds. Packed in between Fletcher, Division, and the LA River, amongst its homey streets you’ll find big-name hot spots like the wood-fired restaurant Dunsmoor, an excellent Romanian bakery in Lemon Poppy, and one of the best handmade tortilla makers in LA, La California Tortillería. And, if you’re looking for something to drink, you can’t go wrong with any of these fantastic places to drink beer.

Eagle Rock Brewery

3056 Roswell Street | Glassell Park

More Info More Info

Few Eastside breweries have been around as long as Eagle Rock Brewery. In fact, when they opened in 2009, they were the first craft brewery in Los Angeles city limits to open in over 60 years. You can sit indoors or outdoors here, and they bring in some great food pop-ups every weekend night. They’ve got great beers across the spectrum, and some of their most adventurous options are their best. Check out Morning Phase, their barrel-aged sour with peaches, or Umi Kumā Lua, a nitro tiki-inspired IPA that is super-creamy and very smooth. On the lighter end of the spectrum, there’s the excellent Bitter End, a pale ale with Willamette and Cascade hops, and #1 Crush, a light, bright American lager.

Verdugo Bar

3408 Verdugo Rd | Glassell Park

More Info More Info

Sibling bar to The Surly Goat, one of the truly great LA beer bars, Verdugo sits on a quiet stretch of Verdugo a short walk from Eagle Rock Brewing. They have two tremendous patios filled with picnic tables, and inside, it feels like a dark, dingy, old school LA watering hole. They have 20 taps of great local beer from places like Ogopogo (San Gabriel), El Segundo Brewing Company, and Crown & Hops (Inglewood). They also manage to get ahold of some of the best barrel-aged limited release beers from Firestone Walker and Fremont, so keep an eye out for those. Their patio plays host to some of the best food pop-ups on the Eastside, too, so don’t be afraid to come hungry.

The Grant

3515 Eagle Rock Blvd | Glassell Park

More Info More Info

The Grant is one of the newest bars on the Eastside, and one you can get very excited about. Not only does this Glassell Park spot have a daily Happy Hour until 6pm, but they’ve also got beers on tap from some of LA’s best local breweries, including Highland Park and the very difficult-to-find Solarc Brewing. Their cocktail and wine list is also superb. No matter when you come, you’ll find a very cool, low-key crowd and lots of comfortable booths to tuck yourself in.
