Beer Hopping in Echo Park shows just how much the LA beer scene has exploded in recent years. A huge part of that reputation (and growth) is owed to the shuttered Sunset Beer Co., the earliest adopters of the region, who were recently forced to give up their space when their new landlord drastically raised rent after ten years in business. But some excellent places still remain here: you can’t walk a quarter block without finding some new bar with a great draft selection. Here are a few of our favorites.

Back in peak form is Mohawk Bend, the former vaudeville theater-turned-California craft beer bar that has been fully revived after a high-profile takeover by Figueroa Mountain Brewing. They’ve filled out the tap list with around 35 California brews – mostly Fig Mountain’s own, but with plenty of friends on the list, such as Pizza Port, The Bruery, and Smog City. Expect even more growth in their selection to come.

A five minute walk up the street, past the iconic Echoplex, is the lone brewery in Echo Park: Sage Bistro & Brewing. Led by Kim Rice, Sage Head Brewer and a leader of the local chapter of the Pink Boots Society, Sage runs one of the only hop farms in Los Angeles, so they really are farm-to-glass. Sage puts forth brews like the smooth Hopster Haze IPA, the sweet-and-bitter Carob Coconut stout, and Kiss The Ground, a slightly sour, minorly funky farmhouse that’s an ideal sipper.

Just because there’s a perpetual crowd at Lowboy, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t swing by here to end your night of Echo Park beer drinking. This divey cocktail spot a half-block from Sage on Sunset packs a huge punch into a tiny space. And the same can be said for their tap list. Their ten draft lines carry some real fire from rarely-distributed breweries like Mumford Brewing, Whittier Brewing Co., and Highland Park Brewery. They’re known for the burger, and there’s a very good reason for it: you won’t find a better nine-dollar burger in the neighborhood.

Hey guys! Awesome article but I definitely think you should have included The Douglas here. Their draft and can/bottle selection is on point. Not far from Dodgers stadium, it’s a great place to have a beer pre-game or post game. Highly recommended!
