Beer Hopping: Three Spots to Drink Beer in Downtown LA’s Historic Core

Your weekend guide to beer hopping to breweries, beer bars, and bottle shops across SoCal's best neighborhoods.

Ah, Downtown LA – one of the few truly walkable parts of Los Angeles County. And as the hub of public transportation in Southern California, this is the perfect place to come spend a day drinking too much beer. Just don’t try to drive down here – there’s no parking, and besides, you’re drinking a whole bunch of beer. These are three of our favorite places to while away the day, hitting a few breweries and bottle shops in the Historic Core of DTLA.

Mumford Brewing

416 Boyd St | Downtown LA

More Info More Info

Mumford Brewing (arguably) originated the hazy IPA style in Southern California. Though they’ve expanded their selection greatly – their barrel-aged stouts and crispy lagers are absolutely fantastic – your trip to Mumford isn’t complete without a couple pours of their New England-style IPAs. Their newest are Super Stealth Pigeon, hopped with Citra and Denali, and the triple IPA 7th Anniversary – both are hazies with a beautiful, soft mouthfeel and some real heat, clocking in above 8 percent ABV.

HiDef Brewing

1203 S Olive St | Downtown LA

More Info More Info

HiDef’s opening flew under the radar, likely because few people were leaving their house when they opened their doors in August 2020. But if you haven’t had the chance to check out this DTLA spot, walk straight down Main Street, turn right on 12th, and head inside. They’re taking big risks and making some truly fun beers here. None of them is a bigger hit than the Ostralada, a fermented michelada-style lager brewed with oyster shells.

Buzz Wine Beer Shop

460 S Spring St | Downtown LA

More Info More Info

Not many places allow you to buy a beer and crack it right at the bar, which is a big part of why we like Buzz Wine Beer Shop on Spring Street so much. They regularly stock local favorites like Enegren, Brouwerij West, and Paperback, but their wide selection varies greatly week-to-week. They also have a giant collection of Belgian & Dutch beers and natural wines.
