Beer Hopping: Three Spots to Drink Beer in Signal Hill

Your weekend guide to beer hopping to breweries, beer bars, and bottle shops across SoCal's best neighborhoods.

The addition of one brewery to a neighborhood can quickly lead to many many more great places to drink beer. That’s certainly been true in Signal Hill, the enclave that’s completely enclosed by Long Beach at the southernmost tip of LA County. Not only is this a beautiful, quiet section of town, it’s also a tremendous place to go for a walk and grab a whole bunch of top-notch local beer, plus some pretty excellent pizza, too.

Ten Mile Brewing Co

1136 E Willow St | Signal Hill

More Info More Info

Ten Mile is the city of Signal Hill’s only brewery and is a true family-run operation. Started by father-son team Dan and Jesse Sundstrom, Ten Mile has a unique area of expertise: brewing historical styles of beer. My favorite is Hidden Hollow, a pre-Prohibition style called a Kentucky common that originated more than 100 years ago. Its appearance is dark and the nose is malty, but it drinks like a much more crushable ale. For the more traditionally minded, you’ll find a solid line-up of IPAs, lagers, and stouts.

Long Beach Beer Lab

518 W Willow St | Long Beach

More Info More Info

You’ve probably had some of Long Beach Beer Lab’s excellent beers – but if you’re not also eating their sourdough pizzas, then we know exactly where you’re going this weekend. Their four-year-old North Wrigley tasting room just across the Signal Hill border has 21 beers on tap, all of which will go extremely well with one of their wood-fired pies. Recently, the West Coast-style IPA program here, especially, has been excellent.

PBS Pub & Co

464 W Willow St | Long Beach

More Info More Info

The latest addition to this area’s booming craft beer scene is PBS Pub & Co. Well, not exactly the latest – they’ve been around since 1950 – but new owners recently took over and did a full revamp. Inside, you’ll find a locals-friendly dive bar, and out back, there’s a great patio. Their newly-installed 27 tap draft system is stocked with local beer options from Ten Mile and Pizza Port.
